Fractional Notes September 1862
Overview
As the war progressed, the paper currency that was not backed by sliver
or gold inflated rapidly. By the time these fractional notes were issued,
it took 25 Confederate dollars to buy one ten dollar U.S. gold coin. The
bank of Chattanooga issued 25 and 50 cent notes with a harp and book on
the notes. Varieties of this type are printed on Bank of Chattanooga notes
that had not been issued. All notes of this type are
signed
by W. C. McClure.
$0.25 Notes
There are two varieties of the $0.25 notes. The first variety G-41 has
a blank back. The second type G-42 was printed on the blank back of a
Bank of Chattanooga G-51 $1 note part of which shows on the back.

$0.50 Notes
There are two varieties of the $0.50 note listed, one with a blank reverse
G-44 and one printed on the back of another Bank of Chattanooga note G-45.
The G-45, with another note on the back, is listed as R-12 (11-15 notes).
A type G-44.1 has been identified that has
an extra point on the printers' design below the N of CENTS.
Three printing
errors notes
which normally have plain backs are known with the $0.50 black
printing on the back. The back printing on one note is the normal
G-44 black printing. The second type note has the G-44.1 "string ray" black
printing on the back. The third type of printing on the back is an offset error.
It is possible that one of these error notes is
G-45 that Paul Garland identified as like G-44 "except printed on reverese
of other Bank of Chattanooga notes".
